Australia once existed in a musical time warp where its country artists were 10 or 20 years out of step with America's country music, and its '60s rockers kept rocking like the '50s had never ended. Merv Benton is a perfect example -- his mid-'60s records sound like late-'50s classics. Benton 's intense, tremulous remake of Eddie Cochran 's "Nervous Breakdown" ramps the psychotic reaction up to a new level, and "Baby Let's Play House" anticipates the rockabilly revival by almost a decade.

Benton enjoyed a number Cincinatti Fireball - Merv Benton - Greatest Hits: 1964-1967 hit singles in his hometown of Melbourne, but he never broke out of Australia despite having one single another Cochran cover, "Twenty Flight Rock" released in America. Benton loved Elvis Presley and recorded a number of his songs, but his vocal style and looks bear more similarity to Johnny Burnette than the King. Canetoad did an excellent job of mastering the recordings from the original tapes so that they sound better than ever before, and the music is of such high quality that -- even though Benton was a Melbourne phenomenon -- he may finally find something of an international audience.

The next release in May saw the national break through for Merv Benton music. For this issue, Merv's versions of Ral Donner's 'I Got Burned' and Johnny Burnette's 'Cincinnati Fireball' were selected and the record proved popular the length and width of Oz. In Victoria it was 'I Got Burned' that was accepted as the 'A' side but everywhere else 'Cincinnati Fireball' reigned supreme.
